The two tap types and what fails in each come first, then where the water shows. The DIY line Queensland law draws comes next, then the point where a tap is done for good. The wider fixture list sits on our tap and toilet work page for Wamuran homes.

How Tap Type Decides the Repair

The tap on your sink decides the repair: a washer tap seals through a rubber washer pressed onto a valve seat, a mixer through a ceramic disc cartridge. The type on your sink sets what the visit involves.

  1. Washer taps

Hot and cold handles of their own, each taking several full turns. The spindle threads down and squashes the washer against the seat, stopping the flow.

  2. Mixer taps

One lever and a quarter turn from off to full. Two ceramic discs slide against each other inside the cartridge, and when they wear, the cartridge comes out complete and a new one goes in.

A jumper valve sits beneath the spindle of a washer tap and carries the washer to the seat. It wears on the same schedule as the washer, so both get checked on the visit.

Still Dripping After You Turn It Off

Water dropping from the spout with the tap shut tight means the part doing the sealing has worn out. On a washer tap that points to the washer, or to the seat beneath it; with a mixer, the cartridge.

The spot the water appears narrows the fault further:

  1. Spout, tap closed

washer, seat or cartridge. The classic dripping tap, and our most booked repair.

  2. Handle, tap open

a perished O-ring or a spent spindle seal. Water climbs the spindle and escapes past the handle.

  3. Below the tap or inside the cupboard

worn O-rings, a connection that has backed off, or a crack through the body. The last one finishes the tap.

A tap with no isolation valve needs the supply closed further back. The shut-off tap at the meter turns clockwise, but check first that nothing on that line, the hot water unit included, relies on the supply staying on.

Tap Washers, Cartridges and the Licence Line

Three rules decide who turns the spanner. The QBCC lists a jumper valve or a washer as unregulated work, open to anyone with the know-how and the level of skill it takes. The result must still meet the standards.

Everything past that stays with a licensed plumber. Repairing or replacing a tap fitting sits in the minor work category for a QBCC licensee, needing no permit and leaving no paperwork behind. Putting in a complete new tap is licensed work too.

Rentals run on a different clock. A repair that is not on the Act's emergency list counts as routine: the tenant reports the fault; the owner or manager then arranges the fix within a reasonable time. Form 11, the breach notice, gives the manager seven days at minimum to act.

Running cisterns follow the same rulebook, and the toilet repairs page covers those faults and the same rental timeline.

When an Old Tap Is Past Repair in Wamuran

The quote reflects four things: the tap style, the part it needs, damage to the seat or body, and how cleanly the water shuts off. No dollar figure applies before we have opened the tap, and the figure lands in a fixed quote after the inspection.

Some taps are finished. A body cracked or rusted through, a seat too far gone to seal against, or a drip that outlasts fresh washers and a new cartridge all point the same way. Our tap replacement page steps through picking and fitting the new one.

The housing stock tells you which fault to expect. The town grew through the 1980s onward, so an older home often still runs washer taps with their original seats, while the newer estate blocks east of town lean on mixers. Homes along the D'Aguilar Highway and Newlands Road span both eras, so one street round can mix the two fault types.

Area-level building approvals added 83 dwellings over five years, so a steady trickle of new fittings sits alongside the ageing stock. Growth across the wider area ran at 6.6 per cent over the same span, and Wamuran Plumbing Services sees both eras on the regular round.

Questions We Answer About Tap Repairs

Call (07) 3523 7172

Why is my tap still dripping when I turn it off?

The part holding the water back has worn out. On a washer tap, suspect the washer first and the seat second. With a mixer, the ceramic disc cartridge has failed and a new one goes in complete.

Why does my mixer tap feel stiff to turn?

Grit or wear inside the cartridge, sometimes the spindle, is the usual cause. The cartridge is swapped for the correct model for that tap, because fittings differ between makes and models.

Is it worth repairing an old tap in Wamuran?

Yes, if the body is still sound and the fault is no more than a worn washer, O-ring or cartridge. A cracked or rusted body, or a leak that keeps going after new parts, points to a replacement instead.

How many litres can a dripping tap waste?

One slow drip can send thousands of litres to waste over a year. Every drop runs through your meter and onto your Unitywater bill, and leaking taps sit outside the concealed leak adjustment, so the loss stays with you.

Will turning the tap off harder stop the drip?

No, forcing the handle down grinds the washer into the seat and wears both out sooner. The failed part has to go, and that is a small job once the water is isolated.
